Learning Citizenship in Ahuntsic

About this project

A true extension of the Solidarité Ahuntsic neighbourhood roundtable’s mission to fight poverty and work on social development, the “Learning Citizenship” program encourages residents to have a voice and defend their interests as citizens.

The project has two main components:

  1. Food security
  2. Development of collective facilities

The neighbourhood is very active in these two very different areas, which are great opportunities for citizen involvement.

More specifically, citizens in this territory will be engaged through two initiatives:

  1. Providing access to fresh food in areas identified as food deserts.
  2. Transforming the Site Louvain into a full neighbourhood with social and community housing and local services. More info

Through this project, the neighbourhood will experiment with a learning methodology specific to citizen involvement that is based on the work of Majo Hansotte, called Les intelligences citoyennes (Citizen Smarts).

This approach will kick off a citizen engagement process with three-day workshops held in May and June and then in September 2018. The workshops are a core component to help citizens become fully engaged in their communities.

Residents of all ages and backgrounds are invited to take part!

We’ll be keeping a close eye on this project!
